PerformColumbia.com Goes Live

Less than one month after announcing their marketing plans, the Performing Arts Collective of Columbia County has launched the website www.performcolumbia.com for their members. This affiliate of the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce is comprised of 25 local performing arts organizations that are working together to advance the performing arts in Columbia County.  The website has information about the member organizations and links to their individual sites. The site also has a calendar of upcoming member events, pictures and links to businesses and other community resources.  The performing arts make an economic impact of greater than $8 million dollars each year on the local economy annually.  Visit the website at to see all there is to offer.   Please click here for more information.

Tourism Leadership Luncheon  - May 13, 2009
The Historic Blue Stores will host the Tourism Leadership Luncheon on Wednesday, May 13.  The luncheon will be held from 12:00 to 1:30 pm. The Historic Blue Stores restaurant and hotel was built in 1840 in Livingston.  This structure has been completely renovated and will host 12 guest rooms and a 120 guest function room. The facility has a restaurant that will serve lunch & dinner, and hosting banquets, weddings and special occasions. A presentation will be given by Daniel C. Murphy, President of New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association who will speak about tourism as an economic driver and successful models he has witnessed for pulling tourism businesses together to achieve results.  PerformColumbia will also officially unveil their website and logo at the luncheon. Member Benefits Expo - May 14, 2009

Hudson Home Business After Hours - May 14, 2009

20th Annual Golf Tournament - May 18, 2009
Get your golf clubs ready for the 20th Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, May 18 at Columbia Golf & Country Club.  Registration and lunch will begin at noon and play begins at 1:00 pm with a shotgun start.  The early bird rate valid through May 8 is $140.  Reservations include golf, cart, lunch, open- bar cocktail hour and dinner.  We will once again have fabulous hole-in-one prize's for this year's tournament and the $50,000 Combo Putt Off.  Twelve lucky golfers will be chosen by raffle for a chance to putt off for the cash.  Reserve early as this is a sellout tournament.  Please click here for more information.

Social Media Interactive Seminar - May 20, 2009
As a follow up to the well-attended Social Media Breakfast in April, the Chamber is hosting a Social Media Interactive Seminar on Wednesday, May 20 at Space 360.  This seminar will provide hands-on application on how to navigate and have a presence on  LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook.  Attendees will be able to bring their laptops and learn how to use these applications.  Panelists from the first seminar Andrea Colby, Senior Account Executive for e3communications and Millie Rossman Kidd, Principal, Millie Rossman Kidd : Design will lead this interactive seminar.  "Social Media" is a rapidly growing low cost way for business people to network and the facilitators of this seminar will help businesses to figure out where this new type of media can fit into their marketing mix.  Space is limited to the first 20 registrants.  Registration starts at 7:30 am and the seminar will run from 8:00 to 10:00 am.  Space 360 is located at 360 Warren Street in Hudson.  The cost of the seminar is $15.  Reservations are required.  Contact the Chamber to reserve at 828-4417 or by email to akneller@columbiachamber-ny.com.

Chamber Seeks Nominations for Excellence in Business Awards
The Chamber is currently accepting nominations for the annual Excellence in Business Awards and Showcase on Thursday, June 18 at Stageworks/Hudson.  The event will feature awards given to local businesses for five different areas of achievement.  The 2009 ceremony will include awards for Community Service, Most Promising New Business, Business Person of the Year, Small Company of the Year and Large Company of the Year.  The Business Showcase will be held from 5:00 to 6:00 pm and the awards ceremony from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.  Event sponsors will be able to showcase their business with a table top exhibit from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.  Attendees will also enjoy wonderful hors d'oeuvres and beverages during the business showcase.   Please click here for more information.
10th annual Agricultural Awareness Tour - June 27, 2009
We invite you to join us to explore agriculture in Columbia County on the 10th annual Agricultural Awareness Tour on Saturday, June 27.  The tour will depart at 10:00 am from the Columbia County Fairgrounds and return at 1:00 pm for lunch.  The tour is open to Chamber members and the public.  In addition to a back roads tour of the county, participants will get an in-depth look into three local farms.  The cost is $15 and includes coach bus tour transportation and a "box lunch" of local products .   Please click here for more information.

Chamber Stats

Establishment of the first indoor commercial fishery in Columbia County is progressing swiftly with fish production beginning in June.  The company responsible, Local Ocean, is halfway through the renovation of 40,000 square feet of the former Acme Building on Route 9 in Greenport.  Local Ocean has purchased and installed some of the new machinery and equipment and will soon start training employees associated with the establishment of the sustainable aquaculture fish farming operation.  Along with some of the tanks, part of the facility's closed filtered system is in place.  For more information about the Local Ocean project call the Columbia Hudson Partnership (518) 828-4718 or visit their website at www.chpartnership.com.

The Mount Washington House will host Comedy Night on Saturday, May 9 at 8:00pm.  The "Not Too Far From Home" Comedy Tour includes comedians Deric Harrington and Aaron David Ward.  Deric Harrington has performed at the world famous Improv clubs in Chicago and Tampa and has been published in the Complete Idiot's Guide to Jokes and Comedy Thesaurus.  Aaron David Ward has performed in a dozen states over the past seven years including at some of New York City's top comedy clubs.  Tickets are only $12.  For tickets or more information about the Mount Washington House call (518) 325-4631 or visit their website at www.mtwashingtonhouse.com.

Fairbrother & Company has been selected by the New York State Library to promote the New York Statewide Summer Reading Program.  The five-year contract covering media promotion and public relations was announced by the firm's president James Fairbrother.  The annual free program is offered in more than 1,100 public libraries and branch libraries throughout the state.   For more information about Fairbrother & Company call (518) 392-7700 or visit their website at www.fairbrother.com.

The Columbia-Greene NYSBOC and NYS Department of Health in co-sponsorship with Greene County Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Planning are hosting training for CEOs, Planners and Contractors on Thursday, May 14 beginning at 6:00 pm.  The class will be about "NYS DOH Water Supply and Wastewater Programs and the Residential Code."  Class topics will include essential elements of DOH standards, regulations and policy as they relate to residential code for residential water supply, residential septic systems and realty subdivisions.  The class will be held at the Greene County Emergency Services Center located at 25 Volunteer Drive in Cairo.  The cost is $20.  For more information about this class contact Kaaterskill Associates at (518) 622-9667.

The Town of Hillsdale will host a Community Flea Market on Saturday, May 23 at the town park in Hillsdale's hamlet at the intersection of State Routes 22 and 23.  Hillsdale residents and others are invited to set up tables to sell a variety of items, from household goods and clothing to crafts, collectibles and fine antiques.  Spaces cost $20 for participants and proceeds will benefit the hamlet committee, which is working to beautify the town center and make it more vibrant with new stores and services.  For more information about the Town of Hillsdale call (518) 325-5073 or visit their website at www.hillsdaleny.com.

Columbia Arts Team will host the 4th annual CAT Songwriters Festival on May 30 and May 31 at Space 360 in Hudson.   The event will feature panels, seminars, song critiques, showcases, networking opportunities and more!  Two days of information and inspiration for the aspiring songwriter, musician or band.  The event will feature legendary singer/songwriter Jonathan Edwards, Andy Pratt, Jill Colucci and the return of Columbia County's own Jess Stone, plus many others guests from the music business.  To register or for more information about Columbia Arts Team call 800-816-4802 or visit their website at www.columbiaartsteam.org.

Community Events

Walking the Dog Theater will host the 2nd annual WalkingthedogWalk on Saturday, May 16 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm in Hudson.  The 2008 walk featured over 125 registered dogs and 400 people participating in the Parade and the Bestminister Dog Show.  Dogs of all shapes, sizes, colors and canine ethnicity are welcome.  This year's event will include a 1.1 mile parade down Warren Street and end at Walking the Dog Theater/Basilica.  The parade will culminate with the Bestminister Dog Show and Fair from 3:00 to 5:00 pm with music, doggie goodies, and lots of fun things available for the whole family.  For more information about Walking the Dog Theater call (518) 755-1716 or visit their website at www.wtdtheater.org.

Join Catamount for the opening weekend of the new Adventure Park on Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17.  The park is for ages 8 and up.  The concept behind formation of the park is to provide an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the woods, the mountains, and the great views while at the same time navigating treetop challenges that will be fun, exciting and safe.  Participants will develop skills, endurance and confidence as they progress through the course levels, which have varying degrees of difficulty.  For tickets more information about Catamount Adventure Park call (518) 325-3200 or visit their website at www.catamounttrees.com.

The Columbia Land Conservancy will host the 19th annual Country Barbecue on Sunday, may 24 from 4:30 to 8:00 pm at Old Chatham Shepherding.  Join them to enjoy live entertainment, activities for children and adults, delicious local dishes with an array of wines and locally brewed beer.  There will be a working ox-team, border collies, alpacas, and more.
